I'd say reasonable driving's safer than defensive one. That man crashed because he was busy reciting the defensive driving scripture to his son ("When you drive think about driving!"). BTW, sometimes it's better to lose an inadequate driver (if it's safe to do so) than follow him or her & wait for an accident to happen. Though I observe most of defensive driving rules myself.

The film itself - though a throwback to the days of two-lane primary roads and cars manufactured before the advent of antilock brakes, airbags and electronic stability control - should remain a useful safety tool to teach the basics of the still necessary skill of defensive driving. Also, warnings against Sunday driving and such tactics as road rage (the scene where the man yells at the Sunday driver) are still applicable today.

Zineter50: Remember that this driver's education safety film was made in 1961, many years before modern safety components on cars - such as antilock brakes, airbags and ESC systems - were introduced. Seat belts weren't even standard in 1961. Defensive driving was the only way to avoid accidents ... and is still the best way to avoid being involved in a deadly crash.

what car is that ? model, year ?all Jews, Muslims, Hindus, Agnostics, Athiets,Taoists should also drive safely !I'm glad we now have seat belts, air bags, collapsable steering column.There was nothing he could have done !Super Slow drivers really do put others at danger.

Yes, I saw this in the late 1960s in school, although my memory of it was William Windom as the father (post Star Trek "The Doomsday Machine") and I guess before David Wayne was in "The Andromeda Strain" in 1971. It's haunted me all these years, so I made my son watch it!

I also remember this film from elementary school. why would they show this to a 3rd grader? very disturbing and messed up.

I stumbled across this vid after 40plus years. They showed us this damn movie in school when I was in 2nd or 3rd grade (circa 1963 or 4) and it scared the hell out of me. I was so afraid my mommy and daddy would die in a car crash I actually had nightmares about it. here I am almost 50 and it still makes me uncomfortable

good job on the video. but im kinda have problem on safety driving. why is it the car company has a defensive car system that allows you to protect from car crashing? its just i watched some video are kinda dangerous.

When I was a kid in the early 1960's my dad drove us to Grandmas in an old 1955 Hillman Minx, it had no seat belts. He always had to be in front and tried to pass a slower car on an icey road and lost control. The vehicle was going about 50 mph left the road and rolled onto its side. I was partially ejected, somehow no one was killed. In 1976 my dad died in a rollover accident. Unfortunately this old long film might not appeal to many. WATCH IT anyway and pay attention- it might save your life. |
